How to cite SGD

October 29, 2002

Whole Chromosome Citations

There is no single citation available for the entire Saccharomyces cerevisiae systematic sequencing project. The reference information for each chromosome can be obtained from the links found on the Systematic Sequencing Table.

The citation for the genetic and physical maps of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as of May 1997 is:

Cherry JM, Ball C, Weng S, Juvik G, Schmidt R, Adler C, Dunn B, Dwight S, Riles L, Mortimer RK, Botstein D Nature 1997 387(6632 Suppl):67-73 Genetic and physical maps of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

GenBank Sequences

If GenBank sequence entries are to be cited, the citation should include the sequence name and GenBank accession number. For example:

The GenBank accession number for the sequence of the left arm of Chromosome I reported in this paper is U12980.

SGD Citations

The basic format for citing electronic resources is:

Author's Last Name, First Name. "Title of Work." Title of Complete Work. [protocol and address] [path](date of message or visit).

The following are examples that can be used to cite SGD.

  • To cite SGD files obtained via the World Wide Web:

SGD project. "Saccharomyces Genome Database" http://www.yeastgenome.org/ (date of message or visit).

  • To cite SGD files available for downloading by ftp:

SGD project. "Saccharomyces Genome Database" ftp://ftp.yeastgenome.org/yeast/ (date of access).

When citing information obtained in a search of SGD it should be remembered that while SGD strives to contain the most current and accurate data, SGD should not be used in citations where other primary sources of information are available.
