Reference: SGD (2002) Use of the ND evidence code for Gene Ontology (GO) terms in SGD

Abstract

Because it is useful to know when a gene and/or its literature has been analyzed and no relevant information was found, The Gene Ontology Consortium created the evidence code "ND" to indicate "No biological data available". This code is used for annotations to the three terms 'molecular_function unknown', 'biological_process unknown' or 'cellular_component unknown' in conjunction with the date that the annotation was made. In SGD, the use of this evidence code signifies that a curator has examined the literature for this gene and that as of the date of the annotation to the unknown term, there was no information in any of the available publications that allowed a curator to make an annotation to a specific term in that ontology, or that as of the date of the annotation, there were no publications for this gene. If you know of information that should be incorporated into the curation for this gene, please let us know by sending mail to sgd-helpdesk@lists.stanford.edu
