Abstract


The COMPASS family of histone H3K4 methylases is highly conserved structurally and enzymatically from yeast to human. While there is only one Set1/COMPASS in yeast, human cells have six COMPASS-family members. Recent studies in Drosophila demonstrated that each member of the COMPASS family appears to have a precise role in the implementation of the different patterns of H3K4 methylation. Also, the sequencing of the cancer genome demonstrated that some subunits of the COMPASS family are highly mutated in different cancers. Studies in Drosophila and human cells providing central clues about the role of this family of enzymes in development and cancer pathogenesis are reviewed here.
